Manifest Destiny
Westward expansion from sea to sea. God given right to possess a continent
Oregon Trail
Path used primarily for moving westward
Nativists
Prioritized native-born rights and did not like immigrants
Republicans
New party. Did not want to SPREAD slavery. Very mixed bag
Free-soil party
Believed free-laborers in the west. Either to build an all white utopia or to abolish slavery.

Piece of literature showing the horrors of slavery in the form of a fictional story book. Made by Harriet Beecher Stowe
Annexation of Texas
2 Presidents stopped it to avoid a war with Mexico. When it finally happened, it came with a lot of land and the topic of slavery and abolition kept popping up.
Mexican-American War
American troops settled on the Rio Grande looking to pick a fight. The mexicans shot at them and the Americans declared war. In the end the Americans won and gained a lot of land.
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
Established the Rio Grande as the Southern border of texas.
Mexican Cecsion: cedes CA + NM to the US for $15M
Wilmot Proviso
-proposed that the land gained from Mexico should be free
Ostend Manifesto
Polk offers $100M for cuba from spain. Sends Pierce over to negotiate. Plan gets leaked and they abandon it

Compromise of 1850
- NM and UT would remain popular sovereignty
- California free state
-Fugitive slave law
-Slave trade banned in D.C.
Fugitive Slave Act
Slaved are returned to their masters, even in free states
Kansas-Nebraska Act
- Stephen douglass said that it would be split into 2, and would be popular sovereignty
-essentially overturned the compromise of 1820
Bleeding Kansas
Fights broke out between the pro-slavery and anti-slavery people in Kansas.
Dred Scott v. Sandford
-tried to sue his master
-DENIED bc basically said he was property and that they cannot take away property and is not a citizen
-also said compromise of 1820 was unconstitutional
John Brown’s Raid on Harper’s Ferrt
Believed he was told by god to stop slavery. He used violence. Stole weapons and tried to give them to slaves to start an armed revolution. He was hung.
Election of 1860
Lincoln wins without a single southern states. The southern states get scared.
Secession
Southern States begin to leave (SC was the first) the union and form the Confederate States of America.
Civil War
North wins
Emancipation Proclamation
Essentially frees slaves in the confederacy. Many of these free people go to the union and even fight for the union.
Gettysburg Address

-Portrayed the struggle against slavery as the fulfillment of America’s democratic ideals
