Q

self-tapping screws

A

Cutting-style screws are best because they act like thread-cutting taps and remove material, without generating high stresses on plastic reducing the possibility of splitting.

A

kitchen worktops with melamine laminate, laminated safety glass used in windshields of cars.

25
Line bending
process used to bend straight lines in heated thermoplastic
26
Vacuum Forming
Process to heat a thermoplastic sheet until it softens and then force the hot and pliable material against the contours of a mold using vacuum pressure.
27
Stereolithography
a 3D printing technique in which structures are built from liquid polymers that harden when they come into contact with computer-controlled laser light
28
Digital Light Processing (DLP)
similar to stereolithography but uses a powerful light source to set liquid resin instead of a laser.
29
laser sintering (LS)
a powder bed fusion process used to produce objects from powdered materials using one or more lasers to selectively fuse or melt the particles at the surface, layer by layer, in an enclosed chamber.
30
FDM
Fused deposition modeling, the 3D printing technology used by MakerBot
31
Resin casting process
liquid resin is mixed with a hardener, poured into a mould and left to cure. Once solidified it is removed from the mould.
32
cure
undergo hardening by a chemical process.
33
Heat welding
a special hot air gun accurately heats the areas being welded together as well as a plastic filler rod that is applied to the weld joint to fuse them together.
34
chemical welding
A solvent based adhesive is used to fuse the surface of 2 plastics together. It comes in 2 forms liquid solvent cement and tensol 12 .
35
Tensol 12
A thicker solvent cement that is easier to apply in localised areas as it does not run.
36
blow moulding
a mass production technique for thermoforming plastics, most commonly used to create hollow bottles. An extruded parison is clamped in a hollow mould before being pumped full of hot air that inflates the parison inside the mould.
37
rotational moulding
a process for making solid hollow objects through rotating a mould of liquid plastic that sets on the walls of the mould.
38
injection moulding
A mass production technique for thermoforming plastics, that uses an Archimedes screw and a heat chamber to inject molten plastic into a mould. Lego is made by this process. Tooling is expensive but outcomes are cheap an can be made in large volumes swiftly.
39
Extrusion
A mass production process for thermoforming plastics, it uses an Archimedes screw and heater chamber to push molten plastic through a die to create a continuous profile. Used to make plumbing pipes, guttering and straws.
40
Kerf allowance (laser cutter)
Thickness of laser that is removed which needs to be accounted for in the laser cutting process. Similar to the amount of material wasted due to the thickness of a saw blade.
41
Quality control for laser cutters
Kerf allowance, power and speed settings, focusing the beam, cleaning the mirrors.
42
Painting (plastics)
Plastics are primed and painted to change aesthetic and to improve UV protection
43
Vinyl decals
Printed and cut self adhesive stickers
44
Flocking
Electrostatically charged strands of plastic stand on end and one end is bonded to the material with adhesive.
45
Etching
laser cutter is used to engrave the surface of a piece of plastic.
46
Frosting
a laser cutter is used to make a plastic translucent making a tranparent piece of plastic more opaque.
47
Heat transfer printing
an image is printed on a special paper that is transferred to another surface via a heat press or iron.
48
Hydro-graphic printing
Colour images are printed on a water soluble film which floats on top of a water tank. The product is then submerged and the image wraps around it. Commonly used on car wraps, alloy wheels, trainers.
49
Electroplating
The process of depositing a thin layer of metal on an object during electrolysis.
50
Rubberising spray
a sightly textured coating that can be sprayed onto various materials to apply grip. Games console controller analogue sticks, camera grips.
