What were Soviet Union’s main aims after winning WW2? [3]
A
- Create a buffer zone to the west of the Soviet Union, protecting it from any attack in the future.
- Spread communism
- Use resources of of others to help rebuild its war-damaged country.

A
A line dividing Europe into the Soviet-controlled east and the capitalist west.

- COMECON 1949 - Council for Mutual Economic Assistance
- The Warsaw Pact 1955 - Mutual defense treaty agreeing to support any of the other communist states if attacked.

How did politics affect the start of the rebellion?
A
- Elections were held after WW2 and the Smallholders Party (ordinary Hungarians) won 57% of votes.
- However, Soviet Union refused to let them lead the government and made the Hungarian Communist party to form the government, even though they only won 17% of votes.
- They ran Hungary against the people’s wishes.
