Negative vs Positive Polarity?

A

Positive: Formation of granulation tissue; clot formation around wound.

Negative: Dissolves blood clots; increases inflammatory

Some literature recommends starting with Negative polarity 1st.

  • Immobilize or use Static Orthoses.
    – Protects healing wounds from further damage while maintaining healing-position.

A

A Dupuytren’s Fasciectomy; a static orthosis used to maintain digit extension.

Need to Lengthen Tissue, what do you use?

A

Mobilization Orthoses–does not cause tearing or inflammation of structures.
Used for long-durations during Proliferative & Remodeling phases of wound healing.

NOT to be used until 6 Weeks post-injury when wound is at 60% tensile strength.
*90º angle of ROM to not damage joint or cartilage!
