Ethnic Tension between:
Han and Manchu; the Han were never fully accepted into the Qing Dynasty
Famine was caused by:
Rapid population growth and natural disasters
Low revenues were caused by:
The tax system being outdated; the government couldn’t maintain infrastructure like bridges, roads, irrigations
Industrialization of Europe:
China began to trade more of its products with Europe, leading to them gaining more wealth. Also led to a European influece in the Chinese economy
May Fourth Movement:
Chinese protest against Western-Style government, especially after Europe supported Japanese expansion of East Asia
Chinese Communist Party
Led by Mao Zedong
League of Nations
Created after WWI to try and keep the peace between nations, and prevent another world war; it failed (obviously)
Chinese Civil War
A war between Chinese nationalists and communists
Great Leap Foward
A series of land reforms by Mao Zedong; it controlled agricultural communes and led to extreme starvation. About 20 million people died due to starvation and those who tried to resist the reforms were sent to “reeducation” camps
Cultural Revolution
A campaign to try and bring popularity back to communism after the failed Great Leap Forward. Included: propaganda and labor camps
Affects of Cultural Revolution
Anyone with ties to the west or anything anti-communist(teachers, old government workers) were sent to labor camps.
Red Guards
Groups of students/teenagers that Mao Zedong brainwashed into promoting the cultural revolution through violence
Economic Liberazation
China began economic reforms like replacing communies with peasant owned lands, allowing factories more controlv over production
Tiananmen Square
Protest where pro-democracy activists fought for a democratic China. The Government responded with martial law and sent in troops, killing hundreds of people
