What was the age of anxiety?
The period between world war 1 and 2 when there was wide spread uncertainty and fear
What was the lost generation?
Who were some of the people?
A group of artist that came of age during the war that had sense of disillusionment and adrift, and struggling to find meaning
Ex: Gertrude Stien, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgeraled, Salvador Dali
Who was Joseph Stalin?
Leader of the Soviet union with philosophy’s of: religious persecution, censorship, with violence and blood. His Goals were: destroy enemies, government controls the economy, and spread communism
Who was Adolf Hitler?
Leader of Germany with philosophy’s/politics of: Overturning the treaty of versailles, become chancellor of Germany, and create/join the Nazi part. His Goals were: Create the german Empire via expansion, and racial purification (primary jewish people)
Who was Benito Mussolini?
Italian leader with political ideas of: Founded the Fascist party, promote violence and terror. His Goals were: Revive the economy and restore glory to the Roman Empire
Who was Hirohio?
Emperor of Japan with political ideas of: Extreme nationalism, military controlled the country but Hirohito as a symbol. His goals were: gain territory for living space and resources
Who was Neville Chamberlain?
The British prime minister from 1937-1940 and is know for closely associated with the policy of appeasement towards Nazi Germany
Who was Winston Churchill?
The British prime minister from 1940-1945, and lead the British into World War 2 and worked with other close leaders like Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin to coordinate Allied strategy.
What is surrealism?
An artistic movement based of dream-like reality and subconscious developed in the 20th century
What is Fascism?
An ideology that emphasizes nationalism and militarism, often accompanied by authoritarian rule
What was Japanese Imperialism?
Japan wanted territory gain to help “save” the asian countries from western influence
What is totalitarianism ?
Government control over every aspect of public and private life
What is Nazism?
a type of fascism unique to germany that focus’s on racial purity
What is militarism?
people who believe that a country should use military methods, forces, etc., to gain power and to achieve its goals
What is imperialism?
The practice of one country gaining economic& political power over another country
What is communism?
An idea created by Karl Marxx of a classless society where everyone is equal
What is socialism?
socialism is a group of people deciding to share and work together for the benefit of everyone,
What is censorship?
control of information and communication by governments involved in the conflict
What is genocide?
deliberate and systematic killing or harming of a group of people because of who they are (race, religion, orientation)
What were the Numberg laws?
antisemitic and racist laws enacted in Nazi Germany which limited what jewish people could do in there life’s
What is antisemitism?
prejudice, or discrimination against Jewish people
What is appeasement?
making concessions to these aggressive powers in the hope of avoiding war.
Ex:Great Britain and France against Germany
What was Hyperinflation in the Weimar Republic?
period of extreme and rapid devaluation of the German currency (the Mark) that occurred primarily between 1921 and 1923. Caused by the amount of debt they owed after the Treaty of Versailles
What was the Rape of Nanjing?
the mass murder of Chinese civilians and disarmed soldiers, looting, arson, and other brutal acts committed by the Japanese soldiers.
