Unit 8 Flashcards
(27 cards)
When and where are most atoms bigger than hydrogen made?
They’re made in the core of the star when the star starts to die.
How long do these atoms last and what are some causes that lead to their end?
These atoms can last as long as the universe lasts if they don’t fall into a black hole or radioactively decay.
Why does chemistry exist?
Chemistry exists because we can change the chemical bonds of atoms by rearranging, destroying or creating them but we cannot change the atoms THEMSELVES.
How many neutrons electrons and protons does carbon -12 have?
6 of each
What is a reservoir?
A place where the substance builds up over time
What is a source?
When the reservoir sends the substance to another place
What is a Sink
When a reservoir receives a substance
What is the definition of processes?
Something that moves and/or changes the substance. Usually indicated by “-tion”
What is the atmospheres most common form of carbon?
CO2
What does the atmosphere receive carbon from?
Animals via decomposition and cellular respiration, volcanos via volcanic eruption and plants via wildfires
What does the atmosphere lose carbon to?
Plants via photosynthesis and the ocean via acidification
What is the earths crust most common form of carbon?
Calcium carbonate
What does the crust gain carbon from?
Animals via sedimentation
What does the crust lose carbon from?
Volcanos via subduction
What are animals most common form of carbon?
Proteins, fats and shells.
What do animals gain carbon from?
Animals via predation and the ocean via shell/exoskeleton formation
What do animals lose carbon to?
The atmosphere via cellular respiration and decomposition, and the crust via sedimentation.
What are plants most common form of carbon?
Carbohydrates and oils
What do plants gain carbon from?
The atmosphere via photosynthesis
What do plants lose carbon to?
The atmosphere via decomposition and wildfires, and animals via predation
What is the oceans most common form of carbon?
Bicarbonate and carbonic acid
What do oceans receive carbon from?
From the atmosphere via acidification
What does the ocean lose carbon to?
Animals via shell/exoskeleton formation
What is volcanos most common form of carbon?
Carbon dioxide
