Unit 8 Flashcards
(38 cards)
What is a Virus?
A virus is composed of nucleus acid enclosed in a protein coat and are smaller than bacterium.
What is a Host Cell?
A Host Cell is the Cell that the virus replicates in.
What is a Bacteriophage?
A Bacteriophage is the virus that infects the bacterium.
What is a Capsid?
Outer protein of a virus
What is replication?
How virus’s reproduce
What is a provirus?
Viral DNA that is integrated into the host cells chromosome
What is a retrovirus
RNA virus with most complex replication system
HIV
Human immunodeficiency virus
AIDS
Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome
Chemosynthesis
Making food by using ocean chemicals
Binary Fission
Asexual reproduction of monera
Conjugation
Bacteria’s mix, making new strains
Obligate Aerobe
Bacteria that require oxygen for replication
Obligate Anaerobes
Bacteria killed by oxygen
Endospores
Tiny, contains bacteria’s DNA, thick covering
Nitrogen fixiation
Converting N2 into ammonia
Why are viruses not considered to be living?
Acellular
DNA or RNA but never both
Needs host Cell to replicate
What happens to provirus after Cell division?
It is replicated
Tobacco mosaic Virus
Yellow spots on tobacco plants
Rembrandt Tulips
Causes stripes on tulips
What are the five main characteristics of kingdom monera?
Prokaryotic
Unicellular
Motile/Sessile
Autotroph/Heterotroph
Cell wall (Capsule)
What two kingdoms is monera split into?
Eubacteria and Archeabacteria
Three habitats of extremists (archeabacteria)
Acidophiles (acidic)
Thermophiles (hot ocean beds)
Halophiles (salty)
Three groups of eubacteria
Heterotrophs
Autotrophs
Chemotrophs
