Imperialism Causes
Desire for new markets, raw materials, military strength, and cultural superiority.
Imperialism Effects
U.S. gained overseas territories (e.g., Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico), increased global influence.
Who were Imperialists and Anti-Imperialists?
Imperialists supported expansion and colonization overseas.
Anti-Imperialists were people who opposed the U.S. taking control of other countries or territories. They believed imperialism violated American principles of freedom, democracy, and self-government.

ended WWI; blamed Germany, imposed heavy reparations (war payments to the Allies)
What is the League of Nations and why did the U.S. not join
international peace organization; U.S. didn’t join to avoid entangling alliances. America wanted to retain its power to declare war.
What was the Red Scare? How did it influence immigration policies in the 1920’s?
Fear of communism led to anti-immigrant sentiment and stricter immigration laws.
What was the National Origins Act of 1924?
Limited immigration, favored Northern Europeans, banned Asians. It reflected the nativist and racist fears in the U.S. at the time. Limited immigration from Southern and Eastern Europe.
What was the Great Migration?
Movement of African Americans from South to North for jobs. Wanted to escape the discrimination and Jim Crow segregation in the south.
How did the Roaring Twenties show the struggle between traditionalism and modernism?
Conflict between old values (religion, rural life) and new (science, urban life, consumerism).
What was Prohibition and what were its effects?
Ban on alcohol (18th Amendment); led to organized crime and speakeasies (illegal bars and saloons)
What was the importance of the John Scopes “Monkey” Trial?
Debate over teaching evolution vs. religion in schools. Scopes was found guilty and fined $100.
Describe the Harlem Renaissance. Who was Louis Armstrong? Langston Hughes? Billie Holiday? Zora Neale Hurston?
