Unit (8) Oxygen Containing Organic Compounds Flashcards
What is an alcohol?
An organic compound that contains the Hydroxl group (-OH) attached to the alkyl group
They are essentially Alkanes in which a single hydrogren has been replaced with an -OH group
What is the simplest alcohol commonly known as “wood alcohol”?
Methyl Alcohol-
CH3OH, methanol
What is one of the oldest known pure organic compounds?
Ethyl Alcohol,
CH3CH2OH, ethanol
What is known as “rubbing alcohol”?
Isopropyl Alcohol-
CH3CHOHCH3, 2-propanol
What are the three classifications of alcohol?
Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary
When does an alcohol undergo dehydration?
When they are heated in the presence of a strong acid catalyst. Reverse of hydration of alkenes
What is the oxidation of Alcohols?
Oxidation is a gain of oxygen and/or loss of hydrogens.
Primarys oxidize →aldehydes →carboxylic acid
Secondarys oxidize→ketones
Tertiary→DO NOT oxidize
What is a Phenol?
Has an -OH group bonded directly to a benzene ring
What compound is this?
2-methylphenol
What compound is this?
3-ethylphenol
What compound is this?
Thymol (mint)
What compound is this?
Carvacrol (Savory)
What compound is this?
Hexyresorcinol (antiseptic)
What compound is this?
Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT, food preservative)
What compound is this?
2-phenylphenol (antiseptic)
