Cold War
An Ideological battle between communist USSR and capitalist U.S.A competing for influence supremacy leading to many indirect conflicts like proxy wars and the space race.
Non-Aligned Movement
A system created to aid new nations following the fall of the colonial system and to not allow the further spread of communism.
Kwame Nkrumah
The president of Ghana while they gained their independence from Britain. He would promote pan africanism advocating for unity among the many different people of africa.
Proxy Wars (Korean War and Angolan Civil War)
When two powers fund or supply opposite sides of a war in hope to gain something. This was done in korea with a communist regime in the north and an anti communist one in the south.
Communist Revolution in China
A communist revolution led by Mao Zedong beginning in 1927 and was put on hold during japan’s invasion. After world war 2 ended the fighting resumed ending with the communist in control. They would industrialize and have land reforms.
Great Leap Forward
A policy promised land reforms placing control back into the peasantry. Those who protested were placed in reduction camps or killed. However, the harvests were failing and china was still exporting crops which led to the death of 20 million people via starvation.
Communist Revolution for Vietnamese Independence
Vietnam as a former french colony after world war 2 declared independence knowing they wouldn’t have the resources to fight a war with them. North vietnam would quickly enact the promises the government placed like land reforms however, it turned violent in many cases. This was in contrast to the south who took a much longer time to do this making them unpopular.
Decolonization
A movement gaining more popularity after world war 2 and the decline of nationalism. With nations becoming independent the U.S and the USSR would attempt to influence them into being democratic or communist respectively.
Indian National Congress
A group formed by educated people in colonial india voicing their grievances with being under british rule.
Muslim League
A political party made during the movement for independence in India. Their main objective was to create a majority muslim nation state in the boarders of india leading to the partition of india.
Partition of India
When India was divided into two separate states and people were moved to the areas forcefully based on their religion. This was the beginning of the kashmir conflict and would become a violent conflict.
Creation of Israel
After the holocaust in world war 2 many jews would migrate to palestine land which was a place for muslims. After the land of Israel was taking up more of palestine they and some allies would protest it’s creation by invading it. The invasion was unsuccessful however.
Metropole
The home country to the colony it owns.
Mohandas Gandhi
The leader of a movement in india attempting to gain independence from Britain. He would you a method known as civil disobedience where people would break unjust laws and serve jail time in defiance to the rule of the british.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Inspired by the peaceful success of Ghandia this civil rights leader would led many protest across america in hopes of ending segregation and passing laws removing discrimination based on race, religion, sex or color.
Nelson Mandela
A political leader in South Africa who was against apartheid and served as the first elected president in south africa.
Francisco Franco
A military leader in spain who led a overthrow of the spanish republic just before the start of world war 2. He would then rule spain as a dictator until 1975.
Shining Path
A communist terrorist group in peru led by Abimael Guzman with the goal of overthrowing the government. The party would commit acts like bombings and assassinations killing between 24000 and 25000 people. Guzama was eventually captured and killed for his crimes.
Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan
An unsuccessful invasion by a communist state taking up finite resources marking the beginning of the end of the cold war.
