Unit A 1.0-2.0 Flashcards
(36 cards)
What is Biological Diversity?
Difference/variety of living organisms on earth.
All living things are…
Hint: 5 things
GRACED Growth Reproduce Adaptations Cells Develope
What is ecological diversity? Give examples.
Variety between ecosystems.
Ex. Different species, organisms, landscape, etc.
What is species diversity? Give examples.
Variety between species.
Ex. Fur vs. Scales, size, colour, diet, etc.
What is genetic diversity? Give examples.
Variety within a species.
Ex. Blood type, DNA and cell structure, etc.
What is an ecosystem?
Biotic things interact with other biotic and abiotic things in a shared environment.
Define biotic.
Alive or once-living.
Define abiotic.
Non-living.
What is an individual?
Its own organism; nothing “smaller”.
What is a species?
A group of LIVING organisms that are all very similar and can successfully reproduce.
What is a population?
A group of the same species that all live together and use the same resources.
What is a community?
When multiple populations live in the same area and share an environment.
What is the order of the big-small scale?
Individual —> species —> population —> community —> ecosystem.
Where in the world has the most diversity?
The equator and surrounding areas.
Where has the least diversity?
Farther from the equator.
Why is there more diversity closer to the equator?
Because the sun’s rays are more concentrated there because its flatter.
Who created the system for classifying organisms?
Carolus Linnaeus.
Whats the name of the system for classifying organisms?
Binomial Nomenclature.
What language is the classifying system based off of?
Latin.
How many words does the classifying system use?
2.
What are the 2 words for the classifying system?
Genus and species.
Define genus.
- first word.
- what… kind, or type, of organism.
- CANIS Rufus
Define species (classifying version).
- second word.
- what species the organism is.
- Canis RUFUS
What’s interdependence?
The dependence of 2 or more species on each other.
