Unit B plants for food and fiber Flashcards
(25 cards)
What are seed plants?
Plants that make seeds
They come in all shapes and sizes and are the largest group of plants in the world.
What is the function of flowers in seed plants?
Reproduction
Flowers usually have male and female parts.
What is the role of stems in seed plants?
Provide a pathway for food and water while supporting leaves and reproductive structures.
What do seeds contain?
An embryo and a food supply for the seed.
What is the function of leaves in plants?
Produce food, release oxygen and carbon dioxide, and allow water to exit.
What do roots do for a plant?
Absorb water and dissolved nutrients, and anchor the plant in the soil.
What is transpiration?
Evaporation of water from the top of the plant, mainly from the leaves.
How does water move in plants?
Water moves up the plant to replace evaporated water.
What is capillary reaction in plants?
Water travels through tiny tubules in the roots and stems, attracted to the sides of the tubes.
Define osmosis in the context of plants.
Movement of water entering the roots through a semipermeable membrane to balance water concentration.
Where does photosynthesis primarily take place?
In the chromoplasts inside the leaves.
What is the main product of photosynthesis?
Glucose.
What happens during cellular respiration in plants?
Plants use glucose for energy and produce carbon dioxide as waste.
What is diffusion?
Movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
What is active transport?
A process that uses energy to move molecules in and out of plant cells without requiring a concentration difference.
What part of the flower is involved in pollination?
Pollen.
What is the female part of the flower called?
Ovary.
What is vegetative reproduction?
Plant reproduction that doesn’t involve seeds and is generally identical.
What are suckers in plant reproduction?
Plants that reproduce from the roots.
What are cuttings in plant reproduction?
Small pieces of a plant that usually have a part of the stem and a few leaves.
What is grafting?
Attaching a seedling to another plant.
List some nutrients essential for plants.
- Nitrogen
- Calcium
- Potassium
- Magnesium
- Sunlight
- Space
- Water
What roles do plants play in our ecosystem?
Provide food, oxygen, and fiber.
What is monoculture?
Planting the same plant(s) every year.
