A tactic in which senators prevent a vote on a measure by taking the floor and refusing to stop talking.
Freedom Ride
1961 event organized by CORE and activists tested southern states’ compliance to the Supreme Court ban of segregation on interstate buses.
Great Society
President Lyndon Johnson’s proposals for aid to public education, voting rights, conservation and beautification projects, medical care for the elderly, and elimination of poverty.
Head Start
A preschool program for children from low income families that also provides healthcare, nutrition services, and social services.
