Q

Origins of Life (7)

A

Panspermia- Life started from Mars and made it’s way to earth

Simple Beginnings- Life started from molecules interacting with each other in cycles.

RNA World- Life started from RNA (RNA creates proteins, and can store genetic info like DNA)

Chilly Start- Molecules were trapped under ice billions of years ago causing these organic compounds to be protected

Deep-Sea Vents- Rich in chemical and thermal energy, they can sustain vibrant ecosystems.

Community Clay- Caused organic compounds to become concentrated and force them into certain patterns much like our genes today.

Electric Spark- Lightning can generate amino acids and sugars.

Q

Ecosphere

A

Comprised of the: Lithosphere (Outermost layer and is basically everything below our feet), Hydrosphere (oceans, seas, lakes, rivers) , Biosphere (all life) and Atmosphere (nitrogen, oxygen hydrogen etc. its basically the air)

Q

Ecosystems! - Species Interactions; Energy Flow

A

Species Interactions: There is mutualism (both species benefit from each other), commensalism (one benefits other is unaffected), competition (each specie is affected negatively), and predation ( one species benefits, other doesn’t)

Energy flow: Transfer of energy from one organism to another in an eco system (either organism gets food from ecosystem or contributes energy to ecosystem)

Q

Galapagos- Ecotourism (limiting tourism to the island + jigsaw)

A
Problems:
Human settlement
Invasive species (both plant and animal)
Over harvesting of sea life
Too many cargo ships= pollution
Climate change
Solution: Ecotourism
Limited tourism
Can't touch nothing or feed anything
Take or bring anything from one island to another
Everything used is biodegradable

Case Studies: Operation Cat Drop

A
  1. Out break of malaria
  2. DDT was sprayed
  3. Mosquitos died + malaria
  4. Killed wasps that ate caterpillars
  5. Caterpillars ate villagers roofs
  6. Geckos ate DDT=Unaffected, Cats that ate Geckos= died
  7. Cats died= Lots of rats
  8. Rats= Plague
  9. World health organization parachuted cats into Borneo and the problem was sustained
