Unit Test 10-11 Flashcards
(20 cards)
What are the characteristics of animals?
multicellularity, eukaryotic, heterotrophic, no cell walls, locomotion
Invertebrates
no backbone, most primitive animals, tend to be small on land
vertebrates
Chordata, have a backbone
exoskeleton
outer, hard-covering that protects soft inner body(ex: crabs)
Hydrostatic skeleton
soft-bodied, water contained under pressure in closed cavity(ex: jellyfish)
endoskeleton
internal skeleton composed of a hard material; allows more movement(ex: birds, humans)
Nerve net
very basic sense and reflex movement
Ganglia
clusters of nerve cells that can coordinate responses; sometimes a simple brain
Brain
centralized collection cells typically in the head area
intracellular digestion
occurs within each cell; its limiting because food must be smaller than cells
Gastrovascular cavity
digestive cavity with only one opening; food enters and leaves through same opening
Digestive tract
digestive cavity with two openings, mouth & anus
Asexual
some simple animals
fragmentation
organisms split into a new organism (ex: hydra, starfish)
parthenogenesis
creation of offspring from an unfertilized egg (ex: lizards, insects)
Sexual
external or internal fertilization
hermaphroditism
have both male & female reproductive structures
Circulatory
carries materials to all cells
What do all animals have
circulatory fluid(blood), tubes(blood vessels), muscular pump(heart)
Open-circulatory system
fluid is pumped through open tubes and washes across body tissues (ex: insects)
