What is the Articles of Confederation? What are the weaknesses?

  • 1st plan of government for the U.S.
  • congress could not tax and so it relied on the states to collect taxes
  • congress could not enforce laws so they relied on the states to enforce laws, however it was rare

What were the problems the New Nation was facing? (depression in particular and what did it look like?)

A

The nation was facing an economic depression after the Revolutionary War.
The effects were:
-unemployment increased
-the value of money decreased and varied from states
-trade fell when the British closed the West Indies (Caribbean)
-money of goods increased (inflation)

Why did the Shay Rebellion happen? What did delegates do after hearing of the rebellion?

A

Daniel Shays and farmers rebelled because farmers were being stripped of their land and thrown into jail due to being unable to pay their debts.
After delegates heard of the rebellion, delegates decided to REVIEW and REVISE the plan of government to give it the power it needs.

What is federalism? What is the importance of federalism?

A

Federalism is the shared power between the federal and state government. It was created to share power and to act as a limit from one government having too much authority. It designates certain powers to the federal and state government to avoid tyranny. It also unifies the government so that they can work together.

II = executive branch; run by the president, carries out the laws
III = judicial branch; includes the federal court and interprets the laws.

A

The system of checks and balances limits the power of the three branches, so none can dominate over the other. It is also to keep the fairness and order of the branches.

What is the issue of slavery? What is done to abolish slavery?

A

Slavery was an issue because it contradicts their ideals of freedom and equality we fought for. Laws were passed in the north and the Quakers created the 1st anti-slavery group in the U.S.
