Unit Test Flashcards
(49 cards)
What is a micro organism
Only be seen with a microscope. Smaller than one mm. Live inside and on other living things. Live in the air land or water.
Cell theory
.Cell is the basic unit of life
.all cells come from pre existing cells
.all living things are made from one or more cells
First line of defence
Skin barrier to keep pathogens from entering the body. Sweat and natural acids kill pathogens on the surface of the skin. Pathogens get caught in sticky mucus and come out by coughing sneezing or swallowing.
Prokaryotic
*do not have a nucleus
*simpler then eukaryotic
* have fewer internal structures
Eukaryotic
*have a nucleus which contain genetic material
*have organelles
* larger and more complex then pro cells
Photo cynthesis
Stores energy
A chemical reaction in plant cells that converts the suns light energy into chemical energy
Cellular resperation
Restores energy
A chemical reaction in cells of most organisms that release the energy needed to carry out life processes.
A cell membrane
Surrounds and protects the contents of the cell
B Cytoplasm
Jelly like fluid in which internal organelles float
C cell wall
Tough ridged structure surrounding the cell membrane .
D nucleus
Contains genetic material that controls cell growth
E vacuoles
Stores wastes food and substances that the cell cannot use right away
F Mitichondria
Release energy from food molecules to power cell processes
G chroloplasts
Captures energy from the sun to produce food
H vesicles
Transport materials help materials enter and leave the cell
Viruses
A virus is a strand of genetic material. Cannot take in nutrients use energy produce waste or reproduce on there own. Need to be inside another cell of another host.
Bactria and nitrogen
Plants cannot use nitrogen gas in the atmosphere.
Bacteria that live on the roots of plants change nitrogen into a form that plants can use as nutrients
Vaccine
A substance that causes a response in the body that protects it against a specific disease.
Can be injected or taken orally.
How do they work
Vaccines cause an immune response for the body.
A vaccinated person has immunity against the disease
Benefits of the vaccine
Helps stop an outbreak from turning into an epidemic or pandemic.
Helps stop the spread of disease
Helps to protect people against deadly diseases and those that cause permanent damage
Antibiotics
A substance that fights infections.
Kill Bactria or prevent them from growing or reproducing
Not effective against viruses or other microbes
Producer
Has ability to produce its own food using the suns energy
Consumer
An organism that must eat other organisms to get nutrients
