Unit1 Lesson1 Flashcards
Introduction to Forces (10 cards)
What is force?
A force is a pushing or pulling action that can makes things move, change direction, or change shape.
* Is a push or a pull
* Can cause things to change shape
* Can cause things to start or stop
* Can cause things to change direction
Everything in the world is in motion, all the time. Is it true?
True! Even things that look perfectly still are packed with atoms that are packed with atoms that are vibrating with energy.
Understanding how motion works was one of the great milestones of science credited to whom?
It’s credited to the brilliant English physicist Sir Isaac Newton. His laws of motion, written over 300 years ago, were so well stated that scientists still use them in most situations today.
Forces are all around us!
Forces are needed to lift, turn, move, open, close, push, pull, and so on. When you throw a ball, you are using force to make the ball move through the air.
More than one force can act on an object at the same time. True or False?
True! Think about all different forces you need to ride a bike. Your feet push on the pdals, your hands push and pull the handlebars, and the muscles in your body help yuo stay balanced. The tires are pushing against the pavement, while the pavement is pushing back on them.
What is inertia?
The tendency of an object to resist change to its state of motion.
An object in motion will stay in motion, unless another force is applied to it.
What is friction?
Friction is a force that acts against moving objects.
What is Newton?
Newton is a measure of force.
What is static friction?
Static friction is a force between two surfaces that prevents thos surfaces from sliding or slipping across each other.
* Same force that allows you to accelerate forward when you run.
* Without it you would not be able to propell yourself forward by running, you would be jogging in place (similar to trying to run on ice.)
