A

A

The UN tries to be peaceful, but sometimes when talks do not work the UN has formed ‘peacekeeping’ forces’

What do UN peacekeeping forces do?

A

UN peacekeepers travel to troubled places in the world and try - sometimes successfully, sometimes not - to keep the peace. Today there are UN peacekeepers working in Afghanistan, Cyprus, Haiti, Liberia and several other countries.

What is UNOCTs ‘Go Travel’?

A

One recent pilot project by UNOCT was the launch of ‘Go Travel’ software in Botswana. Go Travel is a solution to track, monitor and limit the movements of individuals and groups suspected of terror related behaviour. This system supports law enforcement to obtain passenger data to allow them to investigate and analyse terror related threats.

A

In 2022, this was seen in Iraq, where the UN supported over 4,000 returnees from Syria. The UN worked with these young people to deradicalise and offer opportunities to enhance their life within Iraq.

A

These are soldiers from different countries that go to conflict zone to promote peace and dialogue and keep the two sides apart. They are allowed to use force but only in self-defence.

What does the UN do to respond to terrorism in Nigeria?

A

provide emergency food aid to the almost 100,000 children facing malnourishment due to displacement after fleeing Boko Haram. Furthermore within Nigeria from 1 May 2019 schools have been refurbished with support from UNICEF, some now have a high perimeter wall, entry and exit gates, and teachers who have been trained to provide psychosocial support. this is in response to terrorism disrupting education for more than 626,693 children.
