1 Phases of Exploration in Ghana
The synopsis of the history of Ghana’s hydrocarbon exploration under each of the country’s constitutional milestones (period) is as follows:
• Initial Exploration Phase: 1896 –1967
• Second Exploration Phase: 1968 –1980
Intense exploration activity in the offshore
31 wells drilled
3 discoveries (Cape Three Points
• Third Exploration Phase: 1981- 2000
New regulatory and legal framework established
Exploration Program intensified further

1.2 Upstream Development in Ghana
Ghana has four (4) distinct sedimentary basins. These sedimentary basins are
- Western (Tano-Cape Three Points) Basin
- Central (Saltpond) Basin
- Eastern (Accra-Keta) Basin
- Inland Voltaian Basin (onshore)

The first three (3) are offshore basins
and these are fairly well explored with Saltpond as the country’s first commercial oil production field commencing in 1978. The Voltaian Basin however
The Voltaian Basin Project is currently being undertaken by GNPC with objectives including:
• Enhancing the knowledge base of the relatively unexplored basin which would inform the effective development of exploration programmes in the near future
• De-risking the basin to justify further investment
• Building capacity of GNPC for operatorship Figure 3 Voltaian Basin Project- Seismic lines superimposed on Geological Map 1.2.1 Seismic Line Statistics of the Voltain Basin Total estimated line length = 2520.15 km
