The northern economy was bolstered by wartime production of military supplies and goods. They also raised profits from tariffs on the South, and agriculture grew from the expanding northern population.
What was the effect of the war on the southern economy? Give examples.
The southern economy was destroyed. The South’s supply lines were cut, causing a lack of goods. Britain, a main cotton buyer, found other sources of cotton, leading to less outgoing income for the South. Southern farms and cities were also decimated in the fighting.
From what countries did the Confederacy try to get recognition?
Britain and France
Who were Copperheads?
Northern Democrats who wanted to stop the fighting; they were seen as southern sympathizers.
