Untitled Deck Flashcards
(39 cards)
What is an organism?
An organism is a separate object that carries out living processes.
There are around two million different types of organisms on Earth.
What are the seven characteristics of living things?
- Movement
- Respiration
- Sensitivity
- Growth
- Reproduction
- Excretion
- Nutrition
Mnemonic: MRS GREN.
How do animals and plants differ in movement?
Animals move their whole body, while plants move only parts of their body, such as leaves moving toward light.
What is respiration?
The process of releasing energy from food or stored chemicals for immediate use.
Define sensitivity in living things.
The ability to gather information from the environment and respond to it.Eg-Leaves go toward light and animals react to threats.
What does growth refer to in living organisms?
Living beings grow in size from birth until reaching adulthood.
What is reproduction?
The creation of new individuals to ensure survival of the species.
What is excretion?
The process of removing waste products made by chemical reactions in cells.
What is a habitat?
The specific place within the biosphere where an organism lives.
Define community in ecological terms.
Different species living and interacting within the same habitat.
What is an ecosystem?
Combination of a community of organisms and the non-living environment.
What are biomes?
Large regions with similar ecosystems, like deserts or rainforests.
List one adaptation of the blue whale.
- Tail flukes: Helps movement through water.
- Flippers: Direct the whale’s movement.
- Blowhole: Allows breathing at the surface.
- Special blood circulation: Supplies oxygen to the brain and heart during long dives.
List one adaptation of the cactus plant.
- Spiny leaves: Protect against animals.
- Ribbed stem: Captures sunlight and minimizes water loss.
- Long roots: Absorb water quickly.
What is a daily adaptation?
Organisms adjust to daily light, temperature, and humidity changes to improve survival chances.
Give an example of a seasonal adaptation.
- Oak Tree: Loses leaves in autumn.
- Wood Mouse: Hibernates in winter.
- Bluebells: Flower in early spring.
What is co-evolution?
Organisms can evolve together, benefiting each other.
What is the function of the digestive system?
Takes in food, breaks it down, absorbs nutrients, and removes undigested waste.
What is the role of the breathing system?
Supplies oxygen for respiration and removes carbon dioxide.
What does the circulatory system do?
Transports nutrients, gases, and wastes throughout the body.
What is the function of the excretory system?
Removes waste produced by cells.
What is the role of the nervous system?
Controls responses to the environment (stimuli).
What does the skeletal system provide?
Support and movement, and protects vital organs.
What is the function of the reproductive system?
Produces offspring to continue the species.
