What does ‘conspicuous’ mean?
Standing out so as to be clearly visible; attracting attention.
Example: I like to make my opinions conspicuous.
What does ‘discreet’ mean?
Careful and circumspect in one’s speech or actions, especially to avoid causing offense or gaining attention.
Example: When I don’t want to get in trouble for something I do it discreetly.
What does ‘portent’ mean?
A sign or warning that something, especially something momentous or calamitous, is likely to happen.
Example: I think that there are portents that people don’t pay attention to.
What does ‘venerable’ mean?
Accorded a great deal of respect, especially because of age, wisdom, or character.
Example: When I ask someone older than me for help, it’s because I think they’re venerable.
What does ‘inquisitive’ mean?
Curious or inquiring.
Example: I like books that are inquisitive.
What does ‘eminent’ mean?
Famous and respected within a particular sphere or profession.
Example: I think that different artists are eminent in different fields.
What does ‘paraphernalia’ mean?
Miscellaneous articles, especially the equipment needed for a particular activity.
Example: I like to collect paraphernalia that most people don’t think would be collectable.
What does ‘reverie’ mean?
A state of being pleasantly lost in one’s thoughts; a daydream.
Example: In school when I don’t want to do anything I go into reverie often.
What does ‘tumult’ mean?
A loud, confused noise, especially one caused by a large mass of people.
Example: When we were in Redmond, there were quite a few tumults when wrestling.
What does ‘convivial’ mean?
Friendly, lively, and enjoyable.
Example: I like to consider myself a convivial person.
What does ‘peril’ mean?
Serious and immediate danger.
What does ‘malice’ mean?
Intention or desire to do evil.
What does ‘foreboding’ mean?
Fearful apprehension, something bad will happen.
What does ‘lament’ mean?
Passionate expression of grief or sorrow.
What does ‘ominous’ mean?
Giving the impression that something bad or unpleasant will happen.
What does ‘vagabond’ mean?
A person who wanders from place to place without a permanent home.
Example: Right now, Frodo is set up to become a vagabond for the next bit of the story.
What does ‘furtive’ mean?
Attempting to avoid notice or attention, often due to guilt or a desire to avoid trouble.
Example: When they heard the hoofs, they had to act furtively to avoid being seen by the rider.
What does ‘impetuous’ mean?
Acting quickly without thought or care; impulsive.
Example: When I wrestle impetuously I’m usually more pleased with my performance.
What does ‘elusive’ mean?
Difficult to find, catch, or achieve.
Example: When Frodo tried to see who was following them, the rider disappeared elusively.
What does ‘defer’ mean?
To postpone or delay something; to yield respectfully to another’s decision or opinion.
Example: When leadership wasn’t done with summer projects we deferred our meeting with admin.
What does ‘beguile’ mean?
To charm or enchant someone, often in a deceptive way.
Example: In the garden, Eve was beguiled into taking the fruit.
What does ‘impenetrable’ mean?
Impossible to pass through or enter; incomprehensible.
Example: I hate driving at night in winter, especially when impenetrable fog lays low.
What does ‘shrouded’ mean?
Covered, concealed, or hidden from view.
Example: There’s a lot of parts in the initial settling of the U.S that are shrouded with lies.
What does ‘precaution’ mean?
A measure taken in advance to prevent harm or ensure safety.
