Untitled Deck Flashcards
(16 cards)
Neuroglia
supporting cells of the nerve tissue
Neuroglia functions
protect, nourish, and promote the function of neurons
Neurons
the functional units of the nervous system, they are responsible for generating and conducting action potentials
Action potential
electrical signal used by a neuron to communicate with another cell
Dendrites
receiving structures, create electrical impulses in response to environmental stimuli
Trigger zone
the junction of the axon hillock and initial segment
Axon collaterals
allow a neuron to communicate with more cells
Terminal boutons
responsible for releasing neurotransmitters at a chemical synapses
Sensory neurons
detect changes within the external and internal environments and carry this information to the CNS
Interneurons
involved in the processing of information within the CNS and are the most abundant neuron type
Motor neuron
carry motor commands from the CNS to the body effectors which are muscle cells adipocytes and glandular epithelial cells
Multiple neuron
one axon multiple dendrites (ex: motor and interneurons)
Bipolar neuron
one axon one dendrites (special sense organs)
Unipolar neuron
one axon no dendrites (sensory neurons for the general senses)
myelin sheath gaps
are used in conducting action potentials and sending them away from the nerve cell body
unmyelinated axon
conducts axon potentials but at a slower speed rate
