A

February 1945. Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill and agreed for the USSR to join the war against Japan. Agreed to the declaration of liberated Europe to hold free and fair elections in Nazi liberated countries. Disagreed over which polish government should be installed. Germany and Austria to be divided into 4 occupation zones.

A

January 1947 Bizonia was formed with the merging of the British and US zones. This contradicted the aims of Stalin to create a united and politically weak Germany.

JUNE 1948 Germany - Turning point
Trizonia formed between US, British and French zones along with the introduction of the Deutschmark which encouraged economic prosperity in the West. In order to Bring the allies to the negotiating table, Stalin introduces the Berlin blockade. Prevents food, coal and electricity. Average calories = 1070. Allies introduce Berlin airlift as a result.

August 1953. East Berlin workers protest about the poor wages and working conditions. 513 people are killed by the GDR government shutting it down. By then 350,000 had defected from east to west Germany.
