Untitled Deck Flashcards
(27 cards)
What is photosynthesis?
The process by which plants make glucose from sunlight.
What type of reaction is photosynthesis?
Endothermic reaction.
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
light + carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen.
What is the chemical symbol for carbon dioxide?
CO2.
What is the chemical symbol for water?
H2O.
What is the chemical symbol for oxygen?
O2.
What is the chemical formula for glucose?
C6H12O6.
How does temperature affect the rate of photosynthesis?
Increases the rate up to a certain point, after which enzymes denature.
What effect does light intensity have on photosynthesis?
Higher light intensity generally increases the rate of photosynthesis.
What is the role of carbon dioxide in photosynthesis?
Needed to make glucose.
What happens to the rate of photosynthesis if chlorophyll levels are reduced?
The rate of photosynthesis decreases.
What is a limiting factor in photosynthesis?
An environmental condition that restricts the rate of photosynthesis.
What is the effect of a limiting factor on a graph?
The graph levels off, indicating no further increase in the rate of photosynthesis.
How is light intensity measured?
In lux.
What is inverse proportion?
A relationship where one factor increases while another decreases.
What is the inverse square law?
Light intensity ∝ 1/distance².
What are the uses of glucose from photosynthesis? (List at least three)
- For respiration
- Converted into insoluble starch for storage
- To produce fat or oil for storage
- To produce cellulose to strengthen cell walls
- Combined with nitrates to form amino acids which produce proteins.
What is respiration?
The process of transferring energy from glucose for living processes.
What are the two types of respiration?
- Aerobic respiration
- Anaerobic respiration.
What is aerobic respiration?
Respiration that uses oxygen and yields the most energy.
What is anaerobic respiration?
Respiration that occurs without oxygen and does not yield as much energy.
What is the byproduct of anaerobic respiration in animals?
Lactic acid.
What is fermentation in plants and yeast?
Glucose → Ethanol + Carbon dioxide.
What is oxygen debt?
The amount of extra oxygen needed after exercise to react with lactic acid.
