Upper Limb Muscles Flashcards
What main muscle groups make up the upper limb?
Upper arm muscles
Shoulder muscles
Intrinsic muscles of scapula
What kind of joint is the shoulder?
A ball and socket joint
Which muscles make up the external and lateral rotation of the shoulder?
-infraspinatus
-teres minor
Which muscles make up the internal and medial rotation of the shoulder?
-subscapularis
-pectoralis major
-latissimus dorsi
-teres major
-anterior deltoid
Which muscles make up the flexion of the shoulder?
-pectoralis major
-anterior deltoid
-coracobrachialis
-biceps brachii
Which muscles make up the extension of the shoulder?
-latissimus dorsi
-teres major
-posterior deltoid
Which muscles make up the abduction of the shoulder?
-supraspinatus
-deltoid
Which muscles make up the adduction of the shoulder?
-pectoralis major
-latissimus dorsi
-teres major
-coracobrachialis
Which muscles make up the intrinsic muscles of the scapula/rotator cuff?
-teres minor
-subscapularis
-supraspinatus
-infraspinatus
Why are the intrinsic muscles of the shoulder important?
The shoulder is an unstable joint.
These muscles keep the head of the humerus inside the shoulder joint.
What is the action of the supraspinatus muscle?
Abduction and shoulder stabilisation
Where is the origin of the supraspinatus muscle?
It is found in the medial two thirds of the supraspinatus fossa.
Where is the insertion of the supraspinatus muscle?
The superior aspect of greater tubercle of the humerus.
What is the action of the infraspinatus muscle?
External rotation and shoulder stabilisation.
Where is the origin of the infraspinatus muscle?
It is found in the medial aspect of the infraspinatus fossa.
Where is the insertion of the infraspinatus muscle?
The posterior aspect of the greater tubercle of humerus posterior to the insertion of the supraspinatus.
Which muscles control shoulder movement?
-pectoralis major
-pectoralis minor
-deltoid
-serratus anterior
What is the action of the pectoralis major?
Internal rotation
Horizontal adduction
Where is the origin of the pectoralis major?
Medial 2/3 clavicle
Sternum
Upper 6 costal cartilages
External oblique aponeuroses
Where is the insertion of the pectoralis major?
Lateral lip of bicipital groove of humerus
Below greater tubercle
What is the action of the pectoralis minor?
Protracts and laterally rotates scapula
Where is the origin of the pectoralis minor?
Anterior surface of ribs 3-5
