- most people who want to live in cities already do
- urbanisation here mainly took place during the 18th and 19th centuries. it has slowed down since
- some people are starting to move away from cities in the developed world
why is the urban population in developing countries growing so quickly?
- better employment opportunities in cities
- better quality of life in cities- electricity, running water etc
- better education opportunities, universities etc
why will we never get to the point where everyone lives in cities?
-some industries such as agriculture require people to live in rural areas
-space in urban areas will become scarce and more expensive
- some people will prefer to live in rural areas
- improved transport systems and technology will allow people to live away from cities

why is urbanisation much slower in developed countries?
-most people already live in urban areas
-the rate of natural increase is low- meaning less people are born into urban areas
why is urbanisation much faster in developing countries
-high rural to urban migration
- high rates of natural increase- meaning lots of people are being born into urban areas
suburbanisation
the outward expansion of a city where people and businesses move from the inner city to the surrounding, more rural areas, creating new suburbs

describe the distribution of mega cities
in 1950, New York and Tokyo were the only megacities
in 2010 there were over 20 megacties. urbanisation is happening faster than at any time in human history
the greatest concentration of megacities is in asia
most megacities are found in coastal areas or on river ports

i-nvestment- London and New York are the world’s biggest financial centres
-airline traffic- London has 4 major airports
