Ureters - Ectopic Ureters Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is an ectopic Ureter
This is a condition in which one or both of the ureters are not in the correct anatomical position and enter into the trigone region of the bladder. This is a common condition in dogs especially Golden Retrievers. Animals affected present with urinary incontinence; this is often picked up during toilet training.
preoperative care
Assessment of renal function is required for all patients undergoing surgery of the urinary tract. Prophylactic antibiotics are also given. For each of these surgical procedures discussed, the preoperative care is much the same. Radiographs and ultrasonography may be used to aid in making an accurate diagnosis.
Patient Prep
clipped from the xiphoid process to the pubis
Patient Positioning
The patient is placed in dorsal recumbency with the limbs secured to the table appropriately.
Post op
In all cases, urination must be monitored post operatively in these patients, with particular attention to volume and character. It is recommended that intravenous fluids are continued for 24 hours to encourage any blood clots to flush out and prevent post obstructive diuresis. An Elizabethan collar is placed to prevent the patient from interfering with the surgical site.
Surgical Treatment
corrected surgically by dissecting the ectopic ureter out of the wall of the urethra and closing this defect with an absorbable suture. A cystotomy is then performed to allow the ureter to enter the bladder at a more cranial point and sutured in place. 50% of cases will become continent following the procedure, for those that don’t, medical management should be considered
