Functions of the Urinary System
Remove waste from bloodstream, regulates pH levels, and regulates fluid & electrolytes
What are the kidneys protected by?
By the abdomen, back muscles, and fat
How many layers of tissue surround the kidney?
3 layers: fibrous, perirenal fat capsule, and renal fascia
What is the inner layer of tissue that surrounds the kidney?
Fibrous layer
What is the middle layer of tissue that surrounds the kidney?
Perirenal fat capsule
What is the outer layer of tissue that surrounds the kidney?
Renal fascia
How many regions are in the kidney?
3 regions: Renal pelvis, renal medulla, and renal cortex

Proximal tubule, loop of henle, and distal tubule
What is the purpose for the bowman capsule?
Filtration
What does the renal tubule do?
Reabsorption of everything the body needs.
What are other urinary structures?
Ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra
What is another word for urination?
Micturition or voiding
How many sphincters are in the bladder?
two, internal and external
