Urinary System Flashcards
(5 cards)
If there is increased Hydrogen ions in the blood the blood will be more
Acidic
How the urinary system regulates pH and electrolytes?
Link to urine formation
Kidneys - reabsorb or excrete H+ ions
Electrolytes - salt is reabsorbed/ secreted by kidneys
Both occur during tubular secretion
Inputs of water
Ingested food
Drinking/ fluids
Outputs of water
Urine
Sweat
Faeces
Exhaled water vapour
Regulating pH
Both in respiratory and urinary systems
Hyperventilation removes H+ ions, thereby increasing pH
Hypoventilation increases H+ ions, thereby decreasing pH
Kidneys can excrete bicarbonate ions or retain H+ ions to decrease pH
Kidneys can retain bicarbonate ions or excrete H+ ions to increase pH
