Q

Do you like where you work?

A

Yes I do, I have formed great relationships over the years there and becuase of the way I have advanced in the training department I always like coming to work becuase every day is different. Some days I do line checks, some days I do recruiting, and somedays I just do normal line flying and it keeps it fresh.

Q

Why US AIR?

A

I always knew that USAIR was a good company, I watched them go through a couple of bankruptcies but after the last one they had turned things around and were becoming modern and making profits. I have 4 friends that have been hired at Us Air in the last 4 years and they have all had great things to say. My wife and I have both lived in Michigan our whole lives but we both feel that there may be somethign else out there for our family and I have looked into living in the charlotte area and have heard great things. When you throw the merger on top of that its icing on the cake as the combined company will be the largest airline in the world and be an airline that in my opinoin has really great potential

Q

Of all the legacy carriers, why US

A

When I take a look at the top 3 carriers right now American Delta and United I see the most potential in American long term. I think many industry analysts might see Delta as number 1 right now becuase their merger is over but I believe that American after integration will be the best. They have a strong south and latin american network. A good presence in europe, and with the 787 and 350’s on order possiblities for great expansion in asia.

What skills other than flying do you bring here?

A

If you look at my resume, at doesnt stop at just being a line pilot. I have also been a check airman, and ground instructor, and a pilot recruiter. I am proud of what i do, I am a very positive person. I like to teach and help people and I have no problem going out into the public and representing the company at various events. I see no reason why I would not want to continue those things here

What would you do if you didnt fly?

A

Well the first thing I would do would be to try out for the PGA. If that didnt work out, I love the outdoors so I might start up my own landscaping company. I also have a management degree not a flying degree so I have that to fall back on as well so I might get an MBA and get into business.

I always try to treat my crew with respect and dignity and I always put safety first. Q

What do I like dislike about my current job

A

I like the fact that it has so much variety. I like the crews that I fly with I like training and teaching. and I like the fact that every day is different. To be honest, since our bankruptcy our overall company morale has been pretty low especially with our first officers. I hate to see the morale be low and I do what ever I can do to help people out and to make things better. I understand why it is the way it is, I understand that this industry will always have challenges which is why I try to be a positive person to help combat that.

Q

Tell me a time you were a leader

A

There was one flight i had from detroit to toronto where after we got on one of the seatbacks broke. We used to have a mx procedure where the mechanics could defer with the pax on the plane but it changed so we had to deplane everyone. After they were done we boarded everyone up again and we were almost set to go when mx said they defered it wrong and they refused to fix it with people on board. They said it would be a 45 min fix. The passerngers were really upset at this point. I decided to take manners into my own hands. I called down 2 ramp supervisors to help deplane the pax while I called our routers and explained the situation, they changed our plane. I called the fuelers to have them immedieately sent to the plane to fuel it and then the first officer and I helped unload the bags from the back and then went to the new plane got everything ready and we ended up only being 1 hour late.

I wanted to take them but the rules were the rules. I tried everything but had to leave so I walked with them up the jet bridge and explained the situation to them and I think they appreicated that.

How do you prepare when flying into an unfamiliar airport?

A

I usually start off by asking my coworkers or friends if they have ever been to the airport, I may look it up online to see if there are any known problems that have happened there. This is all in advance, I will always review the pictoral charts in my jepps and the company pages for any special information that there is. I will always brief any departure or approach and make sure that it is done in steril flight deck so we both understand.

Q

Tell me about a time you had to depend on others?

A

I find that in a daily operation we are always depending on others to do their job so that we as a team complete the flight on time and safely. I always depend on the ramp to do their jobs, the air traffic controlers to help us navigete the skies safely, the dispatchers to help us get around weather. Just like I depend on them, they depend on me to operate the flight safely and in a timely manner. Its a true team effort that gets it done.

41
Q

Tell me about a time you were stressed and what was the outcome?

A

Toronto flight? IOE in nyc with brand new 250 candidate taxing around the ground. I just made sure we slowed way down, I made sure I double checked everything we as a crew did and we just operated as slow and methodical as we could for the first day and it turned out ok

42
Q

TMAT you had to mediate a coworker disagreement

A

First officer came on board and went right into the galley and took water and pretzles and didnt even say hi flight attendant took offense to this and came up and called him out on it, next thing i knew they were yelling at each other. I looked up at the clock and it was 5 minutes to boarding. I stood up and said stop and i took the flight attendant into the jet bridge. I told the FO to stay in the flight deck, I went up to the gate and told the agent to stop boarding. I came back down and calmed the fa down brought them both back together and said that we need to work as a team and that our customers were the most important thing at this point. I said lets get through this day as a team and we will talk about it at dinner tonight. that night they talked and it turned out ok the rest of the trip

What was your weakest system in training and how did you get around it.

A

When I first started the electrical system just blew me away but I realized that pretty much every airplane I woudl fly going forward woudl be even more complex so I learned a way to study it by breaking down each and every part of it into flash cards and just went over it many times until i got the hang of it.

50
Q

What is the MSA and what fix is it based on?

A

altitude depicted on an instrument chart and identified as the min safe altitude which provides 1000 feet of obstacel clearance within a 25 mile radius from the nav facilit upon which the msp is predicated. does not gauranteed nav aid reception its emergency use only and if its not 25 miles it will be listed.

A

Minimum Enroute Altitude. Red below the airway line. lowest point between two navigational fixes that gaurantees navigational coverage

54
Q

MCA

A

Minimum Crossing altitude minimum alt to cross to maintain obsticle coverage

55
Q

Grid Mora

A

Grid MORAs provide an obstacle clearance altitude within a latitude and longitude grid block, usually of one degree by one degree. They are presented in feet (ft), omitting the last two figures. Example: 7,600 feet is given as 76.

Grid MORA values clear all terrain and obstructions by 1000 feet in areas where the highest elevations are 5000 feet MSL or lower. MORA values clear all terrain by 2000 feet in areas where the highest elevations are 5001 feet MSL or higher.

56
Q

mora

A

MORA’s give at least 1,000 feet altitude clearance above terrain, and 2,000 feet in mountainous (an area of changing terrain were the changes of terrain elevation exceed 3000 feet within a distance of 10NM) terrain.

Route MORAs provided an obstacle clearance within 10 nautical miles (19 km) on both sides of the airways and within a 10-nautical-mile (19 km) radius around the ends of the airways.

57
Q

Two Dashed Solid rectangles on an enroute chart next to each other

A

Gap in nav signal coverage

58
Q

D with an Arrow on top of it

A

D indicates DME/TACAN fix Segment mileage is DME/TAcan distance from navaid. Arrow without a D designates a reporting point from a facility.

59
Q

MRA

A

Minimum Reception Altitude is the lowest altitude on an airway segment where an aircraft can be assured of receiving signals from navigation aids like VOR or NDB. Typically, the greater the distance between navigation aids, the higher the MRA. MRA is becoming less important with the availability of GPS satellite navigation, which allows aircraft to get navigational guidance all the way down to the ground.

60
Q

A

GPS MEA

61
Q

Moca

A

Minimum Obstruction clearance altitude 4500T or MOCA, is the lowest published altitude in effect between fixes on VOR airways or route segments that meets obstacle (like a building or a tower) clearance requirements for the entire route segment. Within the United States, this altitude also assures acceptable navigational signal coverage only within 22 nm of a VOR.

81
Q

worst quality you have

A

I have a hard time saying no sometimes especially when I comes to IOE training. The only reason is because I want people to suceed and learn, not just be told they cant do it and pushed on to the next check airman. Especially if the candidate has a good atitude. The way I combat this is I tell myself, that my family, my coworkers and my bosses deadhead on these planes and they are counting on me to produce a safe pilot and if I dont feel comfortable putting my family on board, they dont pass

85
Q

In the notes section of an approach plate, what does VGSI and glide path no coincident mean?

A

VGSI and IAP glidepath angles/vertical descent angles should be coincidental (angles within 0.2 degrees and TCH values within 3 ft). Whenever a published glidepath/ descent angle or TCH is not coincident with the VGSI angle for a runway, use the applicable note below.

86
Q

what is Adequate Visual Reference?

A

Runway markings or runway lighting that
provides the pilot with adequate visual reference to
continuously identify the takeoff surface and maintain
directional control throughout the takeoff run. Same as the limitations for 1/4 mile for endeavor takeoff.

87
Q

etBlue lands on 33L and reported a loss of 15 knots. You are cleared to line up and wait. Thunderstorm is 6nm to the west of the field. WAYGTD?*

A

At endeavor our windshear policy was to not takeoff if there was an airspeed loss of 15 kts or more reported by similar size aircraft given that the storm was 6nm to the west and approaching, I would taxi off the runway to the run up pad and advise we would like to wait. I woudl contact dispatch the flight attandants and the passengers and advise them and then as soon as the storm has passed or aircraft are not reporting losses anymore.

88
Q

Write down the 6 most important components you’d want from an ILS chart.

A

89
Q

Can you cross a closed runway without an ATC clearance?

A

no ► REMINDER! You may not enter a runway unless
you have been instructed to cross that specific
runway, cleared to takeoff from or taxi along
that runway, or instructed to line up and wait on
that specific runway. This applies to any runway,
including inactive and closed runways.

90
Q

TMAT you went above and beyond for your customers

A

91
Q

MAT you had an abnormal condition and what would have you done differently

A

A year or two ago on a clear and visual day as we were accelerating down the runway at 80 kias I noticed the standby ISIS was at zero knots. I decided to abort the takeoff. Even though when we taxied back into the gate the mechanic said yeah that instrument is shot, Looking back I dont think I should have aborted. I feel that on a nice clear day I could have brought the airplane right back around for a landing or We could have been directed by moc and dispatch to continue if the qrh advised it was safe to do so. About a year later at endeavor we had an empasis about rejected takeoffs and I learned a lot from that and looking back i wouldnt have aborted.

92
Q

What does braking action reports mean to you?

A

If they came from a similar sized plane, they mean the most to me out of any report. MU’s and field condition reports are nice, but nothing beats actual results from an aircraft.

93
Q

f you landed on a contaminated runway what considerations would you use with a meld’d thrust reverser?

A

I would use maximum breaking and I would spool up the remaining thrust reverser very slowly and the second i get any kind of adverse yaw I would spool it down again maintaining directional control.

Q

What if they clear you to hold north of GUP on the 360 radial, how do you enter? What direction are turns? What are leg lenghts?

If you can do either a teardrop or a parallel entry, which one does the AIM recommend? How do you do a teardrop entry?
