Presente de Indicativo:
- El señor Domínguez trabaja hoy en la otra oficina.
- Todos los días regerso a cala a las seis y cuarto.
- Siguen cursos de antropología e historia en la universidad.
- ¿ Comprendes la lección?
- No, no compendo porque no estudio.
If you want to express future time when another element of the sentence makes it clear that the future is being referrd to:
-Will you return tomorrow?
-No, I’ll stay until next week.
Presente de Indicativo:
- ¿Vuelves mañana?
- No, me comprendo porque no estudio.
If you want to indicate actions that began in the past but that continue into the present:
- How long have you been living here?
- We’ve been living here for a year no.
- Since when has MArta been looking for a job?
- She’s been looking for work since January.
Presente de Indicativo:
- ¿Cuánto hace que viven aqui?
- Hace un año que vivimos aquí.
- ¿Desde cuándo busca Marta empleo?
- Busca empleo desde enero.
If you want to refer to past but with dramatic effect:
- At the end of the 15th century te Spanish undertook the conquest of America.
- Prince Juan Carlos de Borbón ascended the trhone in 1975.
- The following year antoher peace treaty was signed.
Presente de Indicativo (historica):
- A fines del siglo XV los españoles emprenden la conquista de América.
- El príncipe Juan Carlos de Borbón sube el trono en 1975.
- Al año siquiente se firma otro tratado de paz.
If you want to exress actions that are seen as forming a background to to ther actions, such as time or weather.
- It was ten o’clock when our friend arrived.
- When I left, it was cold and was raining.
Imperfecto de Indicativo.
- Eran las diez cuando llegaron los amigos.
- Cuando yo salí, hacía frío y llovia.
If you want to exress actions that were habitual in the past with no reference to their beginning or end.
- When we lived in Puerto rico we used to go to the beach a lot.
- We always used to have dinner at that restaurant because the food was good.
Imperfecto de Indicativo.
- Cuando vivíamos en Puerto Rico, íbamosmucho a la playa.
- Siempre cenábamos en aquel restaurante porque se comía muy bien.
If you want to express descriptions of states or conditions that existed in the past.
- The house was new and had big comfortable rooms.
- The sun was setting and the street lights were being turned on. People were aready strolling in the Streets.
Imperfecto de Indicativo.
- La casa era nueva y tenía habitaciones grandes y cómodas.
- El sol se ponía y se encendían los faroles. La gente se paseaba en las calles.
If you want to express actions that were repeated in the past with no reference to their nebinning or end.
- When I was a student, I went to the library every day.
- On the weekends my friend and I would see each other at the café.
Imperfecto de Indicativo.
- Cuando yo era estudiante, iba a la biblioteca todos los días.
- Los fines de semana mis amigos y yo nos veíamos en café.
If you want to express indirect discourse, to report what someone said.
- She told me she was going to the movies.
- We wrote them taht we intended to see them in London.
Imperfecto de Indicativo.
- Me dijo que iba al cine.
- Les escribimos que pensábamos verlos en Londres.
If you want to express what happened in the past.
- I went downtown where Raquel and I had coffee.
- I made an appointment with her at 10.
- Last summer the children had a very good time.
- Last night I slept well
- While I was reading the newspaper the phone rang.
