Sein - Conjugation
Let’s conjugate sein in the present tense.
SINGULAR
1. Ich bin = I am
2. Du bist = You are (singular, informal you)
3. Er/Sie/Es ist: He/She/It is
PLURAL
1. Wir sind: We are
2. Ihr seid: You are (plural you)
3. Sie sind: They are or you are (formal you)
You would say “Du bist…” if you are speaking to one person, and you know them well, or at least, they aren’t your elder (i.e., this is the informal form). If you are both students, and don’t really know each other, this form of the verb is still acceptable. If you are speaking to your friend’s grandmother, don’t use this form.
You would say “Ihr seid…” if you were speaking to a group of people, and it was an informal setting. Think of “You all” in English.
You would say “Sie sind…” if you were speaking in a formal setting — to your boss, your teacher, or if you were speaking to someone clearly your elder — your friend’s grandmother. This form is formal, and can be either singular or plural.
For (singular form) we use the word “BIST” (For ex : You are a boy , is written as, DU BIST EIN JUNGE)
But in plural form, we can use SIND or SEID depending on the conditions which are giving below:
Plural form, first person - use SIND (for ex : We are men - WIR SIND manner)
Plural form, second person - use SEID (for ex : You are girls - IHR SEID MÄDCHEN)
Plural form, third person - use SIND (for ex : They are CHILDREN - SIE SIND KINDER)
