useful terminology Flashcards
(9 cards)
lytic
the phage lifestyle that results in lysis of the bacterial cell upon release of progeny phage
a viral reproductive cycle where a virus hijacks a host cell to make copies of itself, causing the host cell to burst and release new viruses
lysogenic
the page lifecycle that results in stable carriage of the phage (prophage) within the host cell (lysogen)
a viral reproduction cycle where a bacteriophage (a virus that infects bacteria) integrates its DNA into the host cell’s genome, becoming a prophage.
virulent phage
a phage that is only able to undergo replication via the lytic cycle
temperate phage
a phage that can replicate via etiher the lytic or lysogenic cycles (phage lambda)
lysogen
host cell that is harbouring a prophage during lysogeny
prophage
the latent form of a temperate phage that remains within the lysogen (eg integrated into host chromosome)
operator
binding site for the repressor
binds regulatory proteins to alter transcription
promotor
where RNA pol binds to start transcription
negative regulation
gene expression is turned off by regulatory protein termed a repressor
