  1. The names of most cities are considered proper nouns and do not require definite articles.

J’adore Genève - I love Geneva

  1. A few cities have the definite article as a part of their names. Note that the articles are capitalized

La Nouvelle-Orlèans, Le Havre

  1. If you wish to describe a city, it is preferable to use la ville de… with feminier adjectives.

La ville de Genéve est très bell - Geneva is very pretty.
