What fossil fuels contain hydrocarbons
Crude oil and coal
Define complete combustion
When there’s plenty of oxygen all around of the fuel that burns
Define incomplete combustion
When there’s not enough oxygen around fuel that does not burn
What happens if particulates are breathed in
They can get stuck in the lungs and cause damage which can lead to respiratory problems
What do both types of combustion do
Release CO2 and water vapour
How is carbon monoxide dangerous
It can stop your blood from carrying oxygen around the body
What other pollutants are released from burning fossil fuels
Sulphur oxide and oxides of nitrogen can be released
nitrogen oxides form in a reaction between nitrogen and oxygen this reaction is caused by the heat of the burning fossil fuels these gases mix with clouds and can cause
Acid rain
