Key quotes throughout the whole book
Chapter 2 :
-‘great, dark bed’ : suggests how vulnerable Utterson is because we associate our bed with somewhere safe, where we can escape from things that scare us, but here Utterson cannot escape his fearful thoughts
-‘toiling in mere darkness’ : the repetition of toiling suggests how hard Utterson’s mind is working on the questions he has about Hyde because the repetition makes it seem as if Utterson’s thinking is just going round in circles. Also, metaphor of darkness suggests how little Utterson understands because we associate
darkness with secrets; we also associate it with evil which suggests something about the character of Hyde.
-‘his imagination was’ ‘enslaved’ : Suggests that his imagination is trapped and controlled. He is also unable to think freely without any worries
-‘then’ ‘then’ ‘then’ : Suggests that he is still traumatised by the little child getting trodded on. It also suggests that it could link to Mr Utterson’s heartbeat increasing because of his fear of mr Hyde
