Validity Flashcards
(14 cards)
what does validity refer to
whether a psychological test , observation or experiment produces a result that is legitimate
is the observed effect genuine and does it represent whats out there in the real worlf
what term describes whether the researcher has managed to measure what they intended to
internal validity
what term refers to the extent to which findings can be generalised beyond the research setting in which they were found
external vslidity
t/f its possible for studies and measures to produce reliable data that isnt valid
true
give examples of studies and measures producing reliable data that isnt valid
broken set of scales may give consistent readings of someone wweight which is always 7lbs more than actual weight
scales are reliable
but weight reported isnt true
therefore the measure lacks validity
a test that claims to measure intelligence may not measure intelligence but instead
a persons familiarity with iq tests
what does internal validity refer to
whether the effecgts of observed in an experiment are due to manipulation of iv and not some other factor
what is a major threat to the internal validity of a study
if particpants respond to demand characteristics and act in a way tehy think is expected
explain how demand charcteristics may affect internal validity in milgrams study
pt may have been playing along with the experimental situationa nd didnt really believe they were administering shocks i.e they responded to the demands of the situation
what does external validity relate more to
3 things
factors outside of an investigation such as generalsiing to other settings
other populations of people
and other eras
what is ecological validity
type of external validity
that measures the extent to which findigns from a research study can be generalised to other settings and situations
most ptclry everyday life
how do we rember eco validity
eco think of enviro = think of setting
ecological validity is not about
naturalness of a study
whats low mundane realism
task used to measure dependent variable in an experiment is not ‘like everyday life’
+ lower ecological validity
