Variables Flashcards
(8 cards)
Extraneous variables
Any variable other than the IV that may have effect on the DV if not controlled
•noise •age
Confounding variables
Any extraneous variable that varies systematically with the IV so that we can not be sure of the true source of change to the DV
Demand characteristics
Any Q from the researcher, or from the research situation may lead participants to change their behaviour
Investigator effect
Any effect of the investigators behaviour, conscious/unconscious and dependent variable
-designs of study
-interactions
Randomisation
The use of chance to control the effects of bias participants being randomly allocated to the different conditions
Standardisation
Using the exact same, formalise procedures and instructions for all participants
Blind procedure
Participants don’t know what group there in reduced demand characteristics (single-blind)
Double blind
Neither participant, investigate. I know which condition they’re taking part in.
