Q

What is sampling bias?

A

When the selection process of samples is biased, making unrepresentative (of the population) choices

Q

How could chance affect sampling data?

A

When samples chosen, by pure chance, are not representative of the whole population. E.g the 10 buttercups collected might happen to be the 10 tallest in the whole population

Q

What is the best way to prevent sampling bias?

A

Random sampling - to reduce human involvement as much as possible. By using quadrants after generating random coordinates on a computer.

Q

What are ways to remove chance in the sampling process?

A
  • large sample size: reducing probability

- analysis of data collected: determining if chance or variation is the cause of patterns

Q

How is genetic variation created?

A
  • mutations
  • meiosis: formation of the gametes
  • fusion of gametes: which gametes fuses with which

Q

How is genetic variation achieved in asexually reproducing organisms?

A
  • only through mutations, because they only reproduce through mitosis (no meiosis)

Q

What are some environmental conditions that could effect the growth of an organism?

A
  • climatic conditions: temp, rainfall, sunlight
  • soil conditions (pH)
  • food availability

Q

Give one way the environment can influence the height to which somebody grows?

A

If diet is good full height, determined by genes, can be reached, but if it is not then person will not grow to full potential height
