Vehicle Towing Capacity Terms Flashcards
(16 cards)
GVWR – Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is the maximum operating weight of a vehicle as specified by the manufacturer.
TW – Tongue Weight
It’s the downward force that the tongue of the trailer applies to the hitch of the tow vehicle.
PIN Weight
Is the actual weight pressing down on the fifth-wheel hitch by the pin box of the fifth-wheel trailer.
Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)
The gross vehicle weight (GVW) is the actual weight of a fully loaded vehicle (i.e., vehicle, cargo, liquids/ fuels, passengers, towed vehicles, tongue weight, and so forth). The maximum weight that the vehicle or trailer and its load may legally transfer to the road.
Unloaded Vehicle Weight (UVW)
UVW is defined differently as of June 2008. With this new label, UVW is now defined as the weight of the vehicle as configured for delivery to the dealer/service facility (weight of all operating fluids—fuel, coolant, oil, etc). It includes the weight of full propane containers. The UVW does NOT include the weight of a full fresh water tank.
Gross Axle Weight
The gross axle weight (GAW) is the actual weight of a fully loaded vehicle carried by a single axle.
Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR)
The gross axle weight rating (GAWR) is the maximum weight rating that each axle is designed to support based on the weakest link (lowest rated component). If the wheels are the lowest-rated weight bearing component of the axle, that is what determines the allowable GAWR
The GVWR is equal to or greater than the sum of
the unloaded vehicle weight plus the cargo carrying capacity (CCC).
Gross Combination Weight Rating
is the maximum allowable total loaded weight rating of a motor vehicle and any trailer or vehicle being towed.
GCWR minus GVWR represents
the maximum allowable weight for the towed vehicle.
Cargo Carrying Capacity
formerly called net carrying capacity (NCC), is the weight equal to the GVWR minus each of the following:
UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)
Full, fresh (potable) water including the water heater
Full propane container(s)
SCWR is now obsolete
SCWR
SCWR stands for Sleeping Capacity Weight Rating. It is calculated by multiplying the number of sleeping positions by 154 pounds (70 kilograms)
The weight of generator fluids, dispensable fuel, and dealer-installed equipment and accessories will ______ the CCC.

Cargo Carrying Capacity: Modified
If more than 100 pounds of permanently mounted accessories are installed, then you must apply this sticker with the weight added.

Maximum allowable weight for the tow vehicle
The GVWR minus UVW, full fresh water, full propane, and SCWR is equal to?
