Veins&Arteries Flashcards
(24 cards)
how many layers are Veins made up of?
3
how many layers are Arteries made up of?
3
Veins & Arteries: which has a thick muscle layer rather than a thin one?
Arteries have thick muscle layering, Veins have thin.
Veins & Arteries: which has a pulse?
Arteries
Veins & Arteries: which carries deoxygenated blood?
Veins, Arteries carry oxygenated
Veins & Arteries: which is elastic? what does elastic mean?
Arteries, elastic means to rebound back to shape after pulse
Veins & Arteries: which travels TOWARDS the heart?
Veins
Veins & Arteries: which travels AWAY from the heart?
Arteries
Which vein/artery is the excpetion when it comes to carrying oxygenated/deoxygenated?
the pulmonary veins/arteries
what is vasodilation?
the widening of blood vessels (increase of blood flow)
what is vasocontraction?
the narrowing of blood vessels (decrease of blood flow)
what is the purpose of the circulatory system?
Transport. Gases, heat, waste, nutrients, plasma proteins, and white blood cells
What are the capillaries responsible for?
site of exchange, connects arteries to veins,(1 cell layer thick)
What are the branches of the cirulatory system? (4)
1.Systemic:
2.Coronary:
3.Pulmonary
4.Hepatic-Portal
What do systemic branches do?
vessels distribute materials to and from individual cells
What do pulmonary branches do?
vessels travelling from hearts to lungs and back to heart
What do coronary branches do?
blood supply to the heart tissue
What do hepatic-portal branches do?
branch of systemic systems to and from the kidneys and liver
What is an aneurysm?
a bulge that developes at a weakened region in the wall of the blood vessel. Might rupture. Cells are derived of oxygen and nutrients. (due to injury or birth detect)
what are venules?
little veins that regulate blood flow out of capillaries
what are arterioles?
little arteries that regulate blood flow into capillaries
What is atherosclerosis?
a form of arteriolsclerosis (hardening of an artery) characterized by the buildup of plaque in the walls of the vessel
what are varicose veins?
veins that are dilated due to accumulation of blood. blood pressure stretches the valves and permit the backflow of blood. (pregnancy, obesity, and standing for long periods of time)
Veins&Arteries: which has unidirected valves? what are unidirected valves?
Veins. Directs blood flow in one direction
