To talk about an action in the past that was in progress when something else happend

Afirmativas:
* He was playing the piano when the bell rang.
* On July 18 we were dancing and singing.
* Ana was filming a new movie and a short film at the same time.

Negativas:
* She was not playing violin because she had a broken hand.
* We were not living together that year.
* I was not crying for you

Preguntas:
* Was she drinking alcohol before the accident?
* Were they swimming in the river at midnight? = ¿Estaban ellos nadando en el río a media noche?

  • Cuando una acción interrumpe otra.
    Por ejemplo: I was running when the ball hit me
  • Cuando dos o más situaciones ocurren al mismo tiempo. Por ejemplo: While the children were playing the adults were talking.

To talk about a past action that ocurred before another past action.

  • When I got home last night, my mother had already prepared dinner. /Cuando llegué a casa anoche, mi mamá ya había preparado la cena.
  • Tommy had never seen a bear before he moved to Alaska./ Tommy nunca había visto un oso antes de mudarse a Alaska.
  • Max knew Paris because he had visited the city several times./ Max conocía París porque había visitado la ciudad varias veces.
  • Ronnie and Stefanie hadn’t met before the party.
    Ronnie y Stefanie no se habían conocido antes de la fiesta.

Usos del Past Perfect

A

** Expresar que una acción ocurrió antes que otra acción pasada. **Por ejemplo: I didn’t go to the museum because I had visited it twice before.

**Contar una historia o narración en un orden distinto al cronológico. **Por ejemplo: When we arrived home last night, thieves had broken into.

**En relación a otro verbo en past simple (pasado simple) que fue mencionado antes o que está implícito en el contexto. **Por ejemplo: I had already seen the movie (before this time).

**En oraciones de estilo indirecto, para reportar oraciones que originalmente utilizaron el presente perfecto (present perfect) o el pasado simple (past simple). **Por ejemplo: I spoke to Mary yesterday. (estilo directo) – He said that he had spoken to Mary the day before. (estilo indirecto)

En oraciones en third conditional, para expresar una condición hipotética en el pasado. Por ejemplo: If I had known about his problem, I wouldn’t have asked that question.

  • Orden cronológico. Por ejemplo: When we got to the movie theater (past simple), the movie started (past simple). / Cuando llegamos al cine, la película comenzó.
  • Orden inverso. Por ejemplo: When we got to the movie theater (past simple), the movie had started. (past perfect). / Cuando llegamos al cine, la película había comenzado.

Diferencias entre Past Simple y Past Perfect

A

Mientras que las acciones en past simple (pasado simple) siguen un orden cronológico, las acciones en past perfect (pasado perfecto) se refieren a un tiempo anterior, es decir, expresan un orden inverso.

  • Orden cronológico. Por ejemplo: When we got to the movie theater (past simple), the movie started (past simple). / Cuando llegamos al cine, la película comenzó.
  • Orden inverso. Por ejemplo: When we got to the movie theater (past simple), the movie had started. (past perfect). / Cuando llegamos al cine, la película había comenzado.
