Verbos Terminación Gerundio (ING)

A

Utilizamos verbos con terminación -ing, además de en los tiempos verbales continuos, en los
siguientes casos:
✓ Después de preposiciones
➢ I watched a documentary about running (vi un documental sobre correr)
➢ Remember to brush your teeth before going to bed (acuérdate de lavarte los
dientes antes de irte a la cama)
✓ Cuando el verbo es el sujeto de la oración
➢ Climbing is safer than it looks (escalar es más seguro de lo que parece)
➢ Smoking kills (fumar mata)
✓ En expresiones como:
• To look forward to
➢ I ́m looking forward to visiting you in January (estoy deseando visitarte
en Enero)
• To be used to / to be accustomed to
➢ I ́m used to / accustomed to waking up very early (estoy acostumbrado
a madrugar mucho)
• Can ́t help
➢ I can ́t help eating chocolate every night! (no puedo evitar comer
chocolate todas las noches)
• It ́s (not) worth
➢ It ́s worth going by walk, it ́s only 1 km (merece la pena ir andando, es
solo 1 km)
• Can ́t stand
➢ I can ́t stand watching my team when they play badly (no aguanto ver
a mi equipo cuando juega mal)
✓ Detrás de determinados verbos (ver lista)

Algunos verbos pueden ir seguidos tanto de -ing como de to + infinitivo sin cambiar el
significado, salvo si llevan “would” delante en cuyo caso habrá que poner “to + inf”

  • Love: love playing – love to play
  • Begin: begin working – I begin to work
  • Continue: I continue doing – I continue to do
  • Hate: hate cooking – hate to cook
  • Prefer: prefer watching – prefer to watch
  • Like: like swimming – like to swim
  • Start: start running – start to run

Si cualquiera de estos verbos lleva “would”, habrá que poner “to + infinitivo”
