New Labour
Blair, Third Way, modern world that been transformed by globalisation
Left/Right politics was obsolete- abandoned the party’s commitment to nationalisation
- Market economics: pragmatic, accept that the economy is regulated by the market not the state. kept key changes of the Thatcher years (privatisations, reduced trade union power, lower taxes and deregulations).
- Social justice: kept a commitment to social justice- rather than distributing wealth, creating equality of opportunity- education, retraining the workforce and environmental issues.
- Social investment state: welfare needed to become a “hand up not a hand out”. targeted benefits, minimum wage.
- Community not class: Old Labour had seen inequality solely through social class
