Vertebral Flashcards
(21 cards)
Functions of the spine
- support the head
- enclose and protect the spinal cord
- point of attachment for ribs and muscle of back
What are the regions of the vertebrae?
cervical, thoraic, lumbar, sacral, coccygeal
Which region is the cervical? How many bones are in the cervical?
neck region. 7
Which region is the thoraic? How many bones are in the thoraic?
posterior to thoracic cavity. 12
Which region is the lumbar? How many bones are in the lumbar?
lower back. 5
What are the invertebral foramen?
the openings between the vertebrae
What are the invertebral discs?
cartilage between vertebrae, outer fibrous rings surrounding an inner soft pulpy center
How many normal curvatures of the spine are there?
2
What are the 2 curvatures of the spine?
anteriorly concave and anteriorly convex
Which areas do the anteriorly concave occur?
thoracic and sacral
Which areas do the anteriorly convex occur?
cervical and lumbar
What do the curvatures do to support the spine?
it increases the strength, maintains balance in upright position, absorb shock from walking, and help protect
What is scoliosis?
sideways curvature of spine
What is kyphosis?
outward curvature of spine
What is lordosis?
inward curvature of the spine
Does the atlas have a body or spinous process?
no it does not have either
Does the Atlas (C1) consist of anterior and posterior arches and two lateral masses?
yes
Is the Atlas (C2) referenced as the antler?
no, axis
True or False: The axis has a body, spine, and vertebral arches
true
True or False: unique to the axis is the dens which projects superiorly from the body is cradled in the anterior arch of the atlas
true
Describe the dens
a pivot for the rotation of the atlas
