Q

Collision bulkhead

A

Walls in between each void to cut off from the other incase of an emergency. The collision bulkhead is the foremost bulk head to soften blow/cut off from rest of hull incase of fore collision

16
Q

What is the keel

A

The structure beam that runs from now to stern, purpose is stability & control while moving

17
Q

Freeing ports

A

Holes in the lower portion of bulworks to allow falling water flow off the deck

18
Q

What is a bollard

A

Vertical axes tie up point on land for mooring lines. Usually thick centre with side bites

19
Q

What are Cleats

A

Horizontal fixtures mounted on boats used to secure lines

20
Q

Fairleads

A

A guide for a mooring line which enables the line to be passed through a ships bulworks

21
Q

Describe use of an anchor

A

Provides means of mooring boats temporarily (leisure Stops/overnight) also important means to securing boat to seabed incase of emergency

22
Q

Windlass

A

Horizontal axes wheel machine that restrains and manipulates anchor chain on a boat (usually found on larger/cargo ships)

23
Q

Describe hatch covers

A

Prevents space to be protected from entry of water

24
Q

Describe water tight doors

A

Prevent ingress of water from one compartment to another. Can withstand pressure from both sides found below waterline

25
Q

Where can you find water tight closings

A

Passages to pipe tunnels, bunker doors, storage rooms

26
Q

What are the 2 types of doors

A

Sliding & hinged

27
Q

Describe weather tight closings

A

Created to handle brief submerges, located above waterline

28
Q

What is a surge drum

A

A surge drum is a standpipe or storage reservoir located at the downstream end of closed aqueduct or feeder pipe. It is a dam to absorb sudden rises of pressure and can provide extra water during brief drops

29
Q

What is a capstan

A

Similar to windlass, vertically axes structure that helps heave heavy loads though it’s only reeved with ropes where windlass is can be reeved with chains or cord - mainly found on sailboats

29
Q

What are bitts

A

Is a double bollard/vertically situated for mooring

30
Q

What is a mooring buoy

A

Floating structure to Moore vessel

31
Q

What is a fender

A

Air filled ball/device made to absorb kinetic energy of boat while berthing in jetty or quay

32
Q

Heaving line

A

Length of rope which is kept handy ready to throw to someone over the side. No specific length required though no less then 15 metres

33
Q

What is SOLAS

A

International convention for safety of life at sea 1974

34
Q

Winch

A

Mechanical device used to wind up and down chain, rope, cables

35
Q

Trawl windlass

A

Similar mechanical machine that controls/manipulates the trawl on commercial fishing vessel
