What is encephalitis?
Infection of the brain parenchyma
What is the aetiology of encephalitis?
Can be primary or secondary to viral infection of other body sites; 10% caused by HSV.
What are the symptoms of encephalitis?
Prodromal viral symptoms; headaches, fever, meningism, confusion, delirium, seizures, neurological deficits.
What Ix in encephalitis?
FBC, UEC, coags, septic screen
Specific: MRI, EEG, LP with CSF for viral meningitis, CSF HSV PCR
Encephalitis Rx?
Aciclovir; supportive and symptomatic treatment (e.g. for seizures) with close liaison with ID and ICU.
Encephalitis complications?
Fatal if untreated; death in 7 - 10 days.
Neurological sequelae e.g. seizures, amnesia, motor deficits.
